Battery storage on the rise – Latest legal developments and current legislative changes

Overview

The high fluctuations in electricity prices, coupled with continuing declines in battery cell prices, are creating an attractive environment for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Germany. In addition, a developing market for PPAs and tolling agreements is making investments in BESS projects increasingly attractive for infrastructure investors.

The latest energy reform package from the traffic light coalition has also brought in a number of legislative changes that will further promote the growth of BESS, even if some important issues (including grid connection procedures and building permit requirements) still require further adjustment.

Learn more about the latest developments and their impact on the future of energy storage in Germany in the full article by Dr. Maximilian Uibeleisen and Dr. Simon Groneberg, published in VDI energie + umwelt, Vol. 02 | 2025 | No. 5-6.
